What Is SEER2 And What Does It Mean For Homeowners That Need A New Air Conditioning Unit At Home?
The government has made changes to how air conditioning systems are rated for efficency, and raised the minimum efficienty.
What Changes Will Be In Effect In 2023?
The production and installation of air conditioning equipment in the USA is regulated by the branch of the government called the EPA(environmental protection agency). The EPA has decided that the new year will also be when we raise the minimum efficiency for residential air conditioning systems made and installed. They have also changed the way that the air conditioning systems are rated for efficiency. What does this mean for Texas homeowners?
The new air conditioning minimum for residential installations is going to be 15. That number is up from 14 last year. This is the number of SEER that was accepted last year. Now that means that the new 15 seer will be about 4-6% more efficient than the 14 SEER. At least that is how it would have been but we are not only is the DOE increasing the rating, the testing procedure is changing for all air conditioning and heating systems.
The new M1 testing procedure will include a more stressful environment for the air conditioning to have to overcome in order to complete the test. The most notable is the increase of the pressure on the ductwork 5 times greater. This test will make the same rating number be more efficient due to the changes to the test. With this test being harder for the systems this year a 15 SEER2 will perform more like a 16 SEER. This will make your new system approx. 8-12% more efficient than last years 14 SEER.
Now with that all said and done, we are talking about new to new. When you get a new system your system might only be 12 or even 10 SEER or less. That is also said that was the rating when the unit was new not after it has 10-20 years put on it. After 10 years your air conditioning system will loose approx. 2 SEER of its efficiency to wear and tear. Similar to anything else that wears out you will loose efficiency the more and more it wears. so going from a 10 SEER to 15 SEER2 would be equivalent to 24-36% increase in efficiency.
